Guidelines for Developing Traffc Safety Educational Materials for Spanish-Speaking Audiences was developed as part of Educación de seguridad en el tránsito/Education in Traffc Safety (EST), a two-year project conducted by Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC), in Newton, Massachusetts. EST’s goal was to foster the development of effective traffc safety educational materials to serve the growing Spanish-speaking population in the United States.

Language is a substantial barrier to safety and health for Hispanic construction workers in the United States. In recognition of this, The Center to Protect Workers Rights (CPWR), in cooperation with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), sponsored the development and presentation of 10-hour safety and health training in Spanish for residential construction. It is likely that most people can communicate mathematics to a computer more eectively (rapidly and accurately) by speaking than they can by using a stylus on a computer tablet. Today there are many services which provide information over the phone using a prerecorded or synthesized voice. These voices are invariant in speed. Humans giving information over the telephone, however, tend to adapt the speed of their presentation to suit the needs of the listener. This paper presents a preliminary model of this adaptation. For many immigrants to the United States, limited proficiency in the English language is a formidable challenge to both economic and social integration into their new home. Immigrants who speak English poorly are more superficially foreign than others, and this may contribute to their being discriminated against by U.S. natives. Moreover, immigrants with limited English proficiency might self-segregate, compounding this social and economic isolation.

Imagine you’re invisible. When others make decisions or offer services, they don’t acknowledge you. Your voice isn’t heard. This invisibility confers upon you two things: an existence where those around you don’t acknowledge your presence or your contributions, and an exis- tence where you can’t find help to solve your challenges and become “un-invisible.”

Students will interact with teacher in small groups. Play games such as finger plays, Simon Says, Red-Light Green-Light. Read and re-read stories with repeated lines. Dictate stories about classroom experiences. Increase duration of group story time as listening skills develop.
