In the not too distant past, MSOS (multiple system operators) relied on the customer to monitor network outages, a system that greatly contributed to cable television's reputation for inconsistent service. But that doesn't fly in the broadband age. Today's fuff service cable network must have automated processes to detect trouble, pinpoint the location and provide an inication of the trouble type.
