We use a unique data set to examine the return to English knowledge. Our primary focus is on Russian immigrants to Israel, but we study native Israelis as well. Understanding the role of English in this setting is important for at least three reasons.

The maximum time for Impromptu Speaking is seven minutes which includes both prep time and speaking time. There is a no grace period for this event, and students who exceed the time limit must be dropped in rank/rating in preliminary rounds and disqualified in semi-finals and finals.
